3 Steps to Setting Meaningful New Year’s Resolutions

With the new year just around the corner, many of us will be looking to set meaningful yet achievable New Year’s resolutions. But how do you go about setting resolutions that are realistic and will actually bring about change in your life? Here are three steps for setting New Year's resolutions that can help you stay on track all year long.

Step 1: Reflect on the Past Year – Before setting any new goals, take a few moments to reflect on the past year. Think back on what went well, what didn’t go so well, and what changes you would like to make moving forward. This reflection is important because it helps you gain perspective and clarity on what areas of your life are worth focusing on in the upcoming year. Additionally, reflecting on your successes can be an important source of motivation when things get tough!

Step 2: Set SMART Goals – It’s important to have clear objectives when creating your New Year’s resolutions. To ensure success, make sure that your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely (SMART). For instance, a goal such as “I want to be healthier this year” is vague and unlikely to lead to success. However, saying “I want to exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session by June 1st" is much more specific and has a clear timeline for completion. Setting SMART goals will help you stay focused and achieve your desired outcome more quickly.

Step 3: Plan Out Your Progress – Now it’s time to plan out how you’re going to achieve these goals! Make sure that each step taken towards achieving your goal is realistic; aiming too high can lead to discouragement if progress isn’t made quickly enough. Break up larger goals into smaller chunks so that they feel more attainable - this way it won't seem overwhelming or impossible! Additionally, make sure that you have support systems in place such as friends or family who can help keep you accountable throughout the process.

Setting meaningful New Year’s resolutions can be difficult but with some reflection and planning it is possible! Make sure that each goal is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) so that success becomes much more likely. Finally remember not to be too hard on yourself should setbacks occur; mistakes are part of learning how best we can reach our desired outcomes! Good luck this new year everyone!
